Highfields Primary School

Home Learning

This page contains planning, information and ideas for families of Reception age children who are self-isolating or are effected by school closures.

We have organised the activities into a suggested order, but we fully understand that people may be feeling unwell or unable to complete every task.

The activities, especially the daily phonics and maths tasks, are based on the curriculum that the children would have been following in school. Most activities will require adult supervision and this is especially true of activities which require internet research. All internet use should be supervised. Some activities require your child to step outside into their garden, again this should only be done if it is safe to do so.

We will be putting our daily learning activities onto Class Dojo from Wednesday 6th January. Work can be submitted on Dojo via the child portfolio section of DoJo whereby the work will be marked and feedback given where possible.

We suggest that children record on paper and camera phones if you have one will allow children to build a evidence of the activities they have done on the portfolio section of Class Dojo.

Also uploaded to this page is a list of websites and Apps that the children might enjoy and that will help to keep their learning going. This list will be added to as more links are researched and tested.

Thank you for all your kind messages of support and thanks - they mean a lot.

We hope all our families stay safe and well during this continued difficult time. We look forward to being able to work effectively with you on Class Dojo to really support your child's home learning during this new lockdown.

The Foundation Stage Team

Read, Write, Inc

We are so pleased that the phonic scheme that we use in Reception have been so supportive in helping your children to keep learning and practicing their reading skills during this difficult time.  The letter sound cards, green words and methods used are consistent with what the children experience in their classes at Highfields.  Of course no reading session would be complete without Fred the Frog, and we are sure that the children will be delighted to spot Fred in each letter sound video. We are very pleased that RWI have again authorised these to be used freely by children for home learning is this new National Lockdown.

We have also used alternative versions on YouTube  for phonics activities which meet the daily objective we would be planning to cover in class. The RWI team will choose where to start on their sounds- so these are very useful daily recaps and vital practice skills.

The RWI team are incorporating additional spelling activities in their new videos streaming from January each video is available for 24 hours before it is replaced with a new sound the next day.

As a general rule of thumb most of the children would be reviewing set 2 sounds and we will be about to start Set 3 sounds this week. Children still developing their skills on  blending words  (WT1-3)on their Orange cards will benefit from the set 1 session as recaps.

The letter sound videos can be found at https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=7&v=lFyDwUKSw7Y
