Welcome to Key Stage 1

At Highfields Primary School, our Key Stage 1 curriculum builds on the strong foundations established in the Early Years Foundation Stage, supporting children to become confident, independent and enthusiastic learners. In Year 1, there is a strong focus on developing fluent readers and fostering a lifelong love of reading, while children continue to grow in independence and responsibility. Through practical, hands-on learning in mathematics and engaging opportunities across the curriculum, children develop the key skills needed for future success. In Year 2, pupils build on these foundations to become creative and confident writers, resilient problem solvers and collaborative learners who take increasing ownership of their learning. Throughout Key Stage 1, we provide a nurturing and stimulating environment where every child is encouraged to achieve their best, develop confidence and prepare for the exciting challenges of Key Stage 2.
